Two-factor authentication is optional. To turn it on, scan a QR code with an authenticator app, then enter the 6-digit code it shows.

## Turn it on

On the web:

1. Open your account menu and choose **Security & Password**.
2. Find the multi-factor authentication section.
3. Scan the QR code with an authenticator app such as Apple Passwords, 1Password, Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator.
4. Enter the 6-digit code to finish.

In the iPhone or iPad app:

1. Open **Profile** (the gear icon).
2. Find the two-factor authentication section and follow the steps to scan the QR code.
3. Enter the 6-digit code to finish.

## Signing in afterward

After you sign in with your password, an emailed link, Apple or Google, the web asks for your code on an **Enter Your Auth Code** screen. The app shows a **Two-factor authentication** screen. Nothing else loads until you enter the current code. The app needs an internet connection for this step.

## Good to know

- In the iPhone app, 1Password does not show its code suggestion above the keyboard yet. Copy the code in 1Password and paste it into the field.
- A wrong code says so and lets you try again. **Sign Out** is always on that screen.
- If you lose your authenticator, use the [contact form](/contact) and we will help you get back in.
